First, what is the Law of Moses?
The Law of Moses is referenced by multiple names throughout the Bible, such as the Torah, the Law, instruction, precepts, and statutes. Most of these English words come from the Hebrew word Torah, a noun , that references the laws and instruction of God. The first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy are often referred to as the Torah as well - even though these books contain more than just laws.
The books within the Law are the foundation of the Bible. The concept of salvation originates in and is built upon the laws of Moses (see Acts 26:22). The ideas of sin and death also originate in the first five books of the Bible, setting the stage for the rest of the biblical narrative. The entire Bible and the faith system of the disciples, the prophets and Kings all find their roots in these first five monumental books.
To say that the Law is no longer necessary is a significant stretch.
According to 2 Timothy 3:16, even the Law of Moses is profitable for teaching, doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness.
If the Law was no longer necessary for salvation, why would 2 Timothy state that all Scripture is profitable?
Here, the children of Israel are commanded to keep these laws and commandments throughout their generations, so teaching that the law is done away with directly contradicts what God commanded them directly.
"Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else. Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever." — Deuteronomy 4:39-40
Multiple times throughout the Bible, even outside the Law itself, God tells the children of Israel that the laws are for them and their descendants forever. Here are a few examples:
Psalm 119:89-91
Psalm 119:152
Psalm 111:7-8
Matthew 5:17-18
Romans 7:12
Isaiah 40:8
Deuteronomy 31:9-13
So, the answer to the question of whether the Law of Moses is relevant today is YES.
The children of Israel are called to repent, no matter where they find themselves in the world. When they repent, they are to be converted back to the Most High and live according to the Law. This is how they align themselves with the morality of the Bible, the culture of their ancestors, and the ordinances God has set in place.
What do you think? Is the Law found in the Old Testament relevant for today?
